(THE EXPRESSION OF GREETINGS AND LEAVE TAKINGS)


A. Memberi Salam/Sapaan (Greetings)

Dalam hal memberi salam/sapaan ketika kita bertemu orang yang sudah kita kenal baik yang sering kita jumpai setiap hari/saat maupun yang sudah lama tak bertemu dan baru berjumpa kembali, tentunya ada beberapa ungkapan (expressing) yang biasa/lazim di pakai, diantaranya adalah sebagai berikut:

a. Memberi salam/sapaan kepada orang yang sudah kita kenal dan sering kita jumpai setiap hari/saat (Greetings someone for a short time)

GREETINGS SOMEONE FOR A SHORT TIME

FORMAL GREETINGS                                 RESPONSES

- Hi …..                                                         - Hi there …..

- Hello …..                                                 - Hello there …..

- Good morning.                                         - Good morning.

- Good afternoon.                                         - Good afternoon.

- Good evening                                         - Good evening.

- How are you?                                         - Fine/good/very well, thank you.

- How are you doing?                                 - Fine/good/very well, thank you.

INFORMAL GREETINGS                         RESPONSES

- How's life?                                                 - I'm alright/not so bad/terrific. And - you?

- What's news                                               - Just fine, thanks.

- How's everything?                                 - Great/very well, thanks.

- How's business?                                 - Pretty well. What about you?

- What's up?                                                 - I'm terrific.

- How is it going on?                                 - OK/Good.

- How are you getting on?                         - Just fine/just so-so. What about you?

Contoh greetings for a short time dalam percakapan:

1. Mr. Iskandar : Good morning, Talita.

Talita : Good morning, Mr. Iskandar.

Mr. Iskandar : How are you?

Talita : Very well, thank you. And how are you, sir?

Mr. Iskandar : Fine, Thank you. Did you have a good rest last night?

Talita : Yes, Sir. Thank you.

2. Jack : Good evening, Tony. Where are you going?

Tony : Hi, Jack. Evening. I’m gonna canteen. Wanna join me?

Jack : Sure.

Tony : OK, then. Let’s go!


b. Memberi salam/sapaan kepada orang yang sudah kita kenal namun sudah lama tak bertemu dan baru berjumpa kembali (Greetings someone after a long time)

GREETINGS SOMEONE AFTER A LONG TIME

EXPRESSING                                         RESPONSES

- Long time no see                                 - Pretty good/(I'm) fine, thank you.

- Hi, I haven't seen you for ages                 - Couldn't be better/very well, thank you

- How have you been?                                 - Oh, I've been super.

- What's new?                                         - Nothing special/so-so

- What's up?                                                 - Nothing much/nothing special.

- What's happening?                                 - Nothing much/Not a whole lot. And you?

- How are things? (very familiar)         - Couldn't be better.

- How are you getting on? (familiar)         - Pretty good.

- How's everything?                                 - Great.

- How are you?                                         - Not a whole lot. And you?

- Where have you been?                         - I’ve been busy lately.


Contoh greetings after a long time dalam percakapan:

1. Jack : Hi, Tony. Long time no see.

Tony     : Hello, Jack. I’m fine. Thank you.

Jack : Where have you been, lately?

Tony     : I’ve been busy with my extra work.

Jack : Oh, I see.

Tony     : Exactly. 


2. Tania : Excuse me. I think I’ve seen you before.

Marilyn : Me too. You are Tania, aren’t you?

Tania : Right. And you are Marilyn, aren’t you?

Marilyn : Exactly. 

Tania : Hi, Marilyn. How have you been?

Marilyn : Oh, Tania. I’ve been super. And you, how are things?

Tania : Couldn’t be better.


B. Berpisah (Leave Takings)

Dalam hal mengungkapkan kata ketika kita mau berpisah dengan teman/orang lain yang sudah atau baru kita kenal, tentunya ada beberapa ungkapan (expressing) yang biasa/lazim di pakai, diantaranya adalah sebagai berikut:

Contoh Leave Takings dalam percakapan:

Teacher         : Good morning, Class!

Students : Good morning, Mam/Sir!

Teacher         : How are you doing?

Teacher         : Who is absent today?

Students : No one, Mam/Sir!

Teacher         : Have you finished your homework?

Students : Yes, we have.

Teacher         : OK, Let’s discuss the homework! (After discuss homework)

          Now, I’d like to explain about ..... (In the middle of lesson)

          Do you have any question? (In the end of lesson)

          OK, time is up. For the next meeting, please do page ……

          See you.

Students : See you. Mam/Sir!
